just enough to make you blush

a quiver voice,
i'm in a crush

the (international) noise conspiracy | 12.04 | gamh : i can't believe i forgot to mention these cats earlier. the new band of the frontman for refused. i found out about refused simply by running into their album in a store. first their band name is great. second, the album cover was great (but i've been burned on that way too many times to rely). most importantly was the title of their album, 'the shape of punk to come'. after purchasing + hearing ornette coleman's 'the shape of jazz to come' (quite a claim, but it turns out it was quite true), i've often fallen for bombastic titles. dave eggers' "a heartbreaking work of staggering genius" (i won't get into book reviews) + then the refused. in true punk fashion + quite telling, refused broke up after putting out the album. i'm sure the other members of the band have impressive resumes as well, i just can't keep up with the swedish scene.anyway political + intelligent punk (gang of four | the minutemen), this should be a great show.

john wesley harding | 12.11 | BotH : wesley harding stace named his band john wesley harding in a nod to bob dylan. he sounds nothing like him or that album. nor in my opinion does he sound like elvis costello whom he is often compared to (he recorded with the attractions once). he is a great pop writer, though, combining folk influences.

aimee mann | 12.12 | fillmore : like most of the world, i only really knew her from 'voices carry' (a great song) until that amazing soundtrack to 'magnolia' + the follow up 'bachelor #2' album. piercing eyes to boot.

elliott smith | 12.18 | gamh : i often refer to this guy when describing other bands, + now i have to describe him. remember the film footage of the beatles when they first met bob dylan? they idolized him + were so excited to meet him. dylan (true to his don't look back fashion) cut them to size, claiming all of their songs were basically meaningless pop, with no depth. that moment forever altered the beatles' course (+ thus, the course of pop music). so there was that transition period for the beatles between writing bubble gum pop to writing psychedelic political. smith sounds like a whispery paul simon singing for the beatles during that transition phase. (shite, it took me a long time to get somewhere with that) he has an uncanny gift, posessed by few, to write melodies that are both uplifting yet eerily sad at the same time. think roy orbison. or maybe the beach boys' 'in my room.' or those weird little lullabyes by the velvet underground.

black rebel motorcycle club | 12.28+29 | BotH : i'm always searching for a local band to go see. i'm not that familiar with these guys. what i've heard is droning + fuzzy...very jesus + mary chain. too bad their name is not that good.

ray manzarek | 1.04 | gamh : jim morrison was god. but not enough credit goes to the sonic umpf behind all of his ramblings. a lot of the sex would be missing without the religious incantations of manzarek's keys. years later, he continued this work adding a familiar background to x's amazing debut. i have no idea what he's like solo. it might be frighteningly indulgent.

another weekend: honeymoon/divorce

tied them together with noble force
the day... turned twice my age

missed a few before, so sorry for two in one week.

raul malo | 12.11 | bimbo's : the amazing tenor of the mavericks, if only his songwriting were as strong.

calexico | 01.12 | gamh : the two "sidemen" from the genius band giant sand, also from OP8 + the friends of dean martinez. morricone meets surf + latin tones. slow, but intense. stare at yer shoes.

sleater-kinney | 01.14 | gamh : i have SO been waiting for these cats to tour again. this possibly may be the best band in rock today. my opinion for sure, but some stupid magazine recently said so too, which of course makes me question my opinion. women have been the trailblazers in every music genre for the past ten years at least + this band is a prime example. from girlie whispers to outright testosterone screaming that puts cobain to shame. i never really understood women's reactions to the sexuality of rock performers like jim morrison or even elvis, until i saw this band. i simply turn to butter in a skillet watching carrie brownstein play. i've never seen a hip meet a guitar like that. i think she may be a lesbian, but no doubt i could make her switch to the other team, right? oh yeah, this is supposed to be about the music. their dueling guitars recall tom verlaine + richard lloyd, while the emotion behind everything is so sincere. the usual (deserved) bashing of men is blurred by their understanding of modern sexuality (akin to the lyrics of say bob mould or pete shelley). as such it takes the riot grrl scenario to a much more mature + whole level.

del mccoury | 2.15 | gamh : tops. this was 1 of the top 5 shows i've seen this year. the top 3 bluegrass bands around are this band, union station, + ralph stanley+the clinch mountain boys. unfortunately union station backs alison krauss who has taken a decidedly radio friendly route to country, so the purity of bluegrass of which they are so capable rarely is shown anymore. del + family came out onto a stage at the great american armed only with unplugged instruments + two microphones. as acoustic as a show can get. the place was packed + when they played the softest funeral dirge, you could not even hear the clinking of a glass. truly like watching a band the band the way you should, eliminating the offstage unnamed member, the soundman. it takes true talent + hard work to blend 5 voices + 5 instruments through two mics + fill a space like this hall. so good. SO good. to top it all off they played a version of richard thompson's '52 vincent black lightning. fans of steve earle, note that this was his "backup" band on his grammy winning mountain album.

it's not the mascara

it's the feeling when you blink

for those new, if you don't wanna receive these, let me know.

r.i.p. champ hood. austin violinist extraordinaire. you might know him from uncle walt's band, toni price (his last gig), the bad livers, richard buckner (devotion + doubt), david halley, + even jello biafra. you might not know any of those people. champ was one of the nicest musicians i knew. viva deschamp.

shannon wright | 11.15 | BotH : i stumbled on to this woman, who was opening for the dirty three. elements of fiona apple, tori amos + chan marshall. she played solo + bounced between piano + guitar. the difference between her songs on the different instruments were like night + day. townes van zandt once said 'there's two kinds of songwriters. piano songwriters + guitar songwriters. i chose guitar because it travels well.' very unusual performer.

bebel gilberto | 11.28 | fillmore : here's a little samba that's composed of just one note. the note's fallen a long way from the tree. really only one album under her belt, she's already collaborated with amon tobin, david byrne, towa tei + the thievery corporation. i prefer not to think about garota's partner in crime on ipanema.

jonathan richman | 12.8 | slim's : i rambled on enough about this guy last time, so i'll save my breath on this email. such an affirmation, do not miss this show. he did not sing a specific song for me at the BotH show, though. stingy bastard.

el vez | 12.20 | BotH : lawdy lawdy lawdy

mark lanegan | 12.21 | slim's : lanegan's screaming trees were one of the many unsung heroes from the pacific northwest when nirvana hit. solo, lanegan is a completely different animal, akin to bob mould's solo work in comparison to husker du. just worlds apart. here, lanegan's solo work is easily better than the trees stuff.

imperial teen | 12.29 | slim's : what a great band name. pretty spot on, too. sugary pop played by two boys + two girls dressed in matching teenage outfits. "you like strawberries. i like you." it ain't genius, but it's sincere + fun.

down main street after midnight

a brand new pack of cigs
a fresh one hangin' from her lips
a beer between her legs

tenacious d | 10.31 | warfield : jack black's parody/comedy set to his amazing voice (yes, that's really him singing 'let's get it on' in high fidelity), with his pal kyle gass.

de la soul | 11.8 | fillmore : genius hip-hop

me'shel ndegÈocello | 11.14 | bimbo's

king crimson w/john paul jones | 11.14 | warfield : progrock wankers. i recently purchased "discipline" on cd, mainly beacuse it's a re-issue, i only had it on album + let's face it the packaging was cool. it has some great moments. it also has some truly pathetic attempts at art. don't know if jpj is joining them or opening. screw that construction worker + rock's sloppiest guitarist, though. jpj + john bonham were the real genius behind zep. when plant + page were trying to do some reunion thing, jpj said screw it, i'm creating new music. with diamanda galas, no less.

grant lee phillips | 11.16 | slim's : here recently. by all reports, it was an amazing show. his new album is brilliant.

supersuckers | 11.17 | slim's : the no nonsense side of the grunge scene.

robert earl keen, jr | 11.30 | fillmore :to me keen is an eery reflection of texas, in that he encompasses so much about the state with unparalleled accuracy. as such, there is so much about him that i can't stand. mainly his too often drunken frat boy riddled crowd (he is without doubt the heir to the jerry jeff scene/genre). some say you shouldn't judge a performer by their crowd. hard not to when they're spilling their beer on your shoes + screaming, pleading "COPENHAGEN" in your ear at the top of their lungs, bits of the nicotine+saliva soaked sludge flying. townes took care of that crowd by writing (+ performing when appropriate) "talking fraternity blues". ('if you want good friends, they're gonna cost you') townes was in a fraternity. not that i really have anything against frat guys. hey, some of my best friends were in... anyway. keen, though, has also an amazing songwriting ability + can play a tune that will immediately hush the entire audience, turning a crowd of raging morons into bleary-eyed putty. after that of course, he'll tear into 'the road goes on forever'. then you'd better dance. or watch yer ass.

wilco | 12.3 added show | fillmore : can tweedy sell out a third show? jesus.

nick cave | 4.18+19 | warfield : tickets went on sale sunday. the shows are a week after my birthday. hint hint.

i wish you would make up my bed

so i could make up my mind
trying for sleeping instead
maybe you'll rest sometime.

radio is becoming one big commercial, while commercials are showcasing truly original music. nick drake, iggy pop, the buzzcocks, wiseguys... i recently saw a target commercial featuring 'speeding motorcycle', a daniel johnston song performed by mary lou lord. what in the hell is going on?

sparklehorse | 11.11 | bimbo's : definitely in my top ten (no i don't have ten) releases this year.

ryan adams | 11.14 | fillmore : whiskeytown is gone. in those ashes, ryan adams created one of the best albums of last year. imagine paul westerberg + gram parsons getting drunk (duh) in a goth bar. this is not a typo. he does not, i repeat does NOT sing "cuts like a knife." to wit:
as a man, i ain't never been much for sunny days
i'm as calm as a fruit stand in new york and maybe as strange
when the colors go out of my eyes it's usually the change.
but damn, sam, i love a woman that rains.

sarah harmer | 11.14 | BotH : great lyrics, nice voice. folky with more of an edge than that lilith leader.

wilco | 12.1+2 | fillmore : choosing between chocolate + vanilla, or bourbon + scotch is not an eternal choice. some people enjoy debating which is better more than simply enjoying one. for their sake, thank heavens son volt is not playing the same night.

eels (& howe gelb) | 12.3 | gamh : you know, i still haven't seen or bought an eels album. but there's that genius howe gelb opening for them.

los lobos | 12.6 | fillmore : roots in veins. la luna me dice una cosa. las estrellas me dicen otra. la luz del dia me canta este triste cancion.

staring at your silken lids

chestnut laden steeped and hid

ok, so i said i wasn't going to get into the lineup at the sfjazz fest, but there are a few standouts.

mccoy tyner, tommy flanagan + pharoah sanders | 10.24 | masonic : a dear friend + i were having a conversation recently about astounding, even legendary, musicians that we have yet to see. people whom we'd kick ourselves if they kicked + we never took the time to go see them. i can think of two such musicians that i've seen this year. this evening ...DEARLAWD... is filled with three in one show. just an amazing line-up of talent. to top it all off, the evening is billed as 'a love supreme' and commemorates john coltrane. all three played with him. such a unique opportunity to hear coltrane's music. no doubt they will improvise it nearly unidentifiable with their own genius.

bill frisell + greg leisz + boubacar traorÈ | 10.29 | palace of fine arts : i recently saw bill for the first time a few months ago. bill has been building an amazing new sound taking country further into jazz than i think it's ever been. leisz is a lap steel player who has backed up some of my favorite alt country artists. car car traorÈ is one of the most intense blues styled jazz i've heard.

charles lloyd + zakir hussain | 11.02 | grace cathedral : i have no idea what this will produce with sax + a breathtaking tabla master. stern grove did not do hussain justice. no doubt grace cathedral will

non jazz fest stuff:

dj shadow + cut chemist | 10.17 | fillmore : you know those shows that sum up pop music movements? the ones either on vh1 or the pbs rock 'n' roll series? ok, the fact that those shows acted like punk music went away from the period between sid's death + smells like teen spirit struck a raw chord in me. even worse, though, is their importance on the white artists who brought music that began in black communities to popularity. don't get me wrong. i love elvis, the beatles. dear god what would i do without the stones + they ripped it all! yeah, + i dig the beasties. but the glossing over of the foundations is just disturbing. anyway... in about 7 years when vh1 + pbs acknowledge turntables as a musical instrument, you can bet these guys will be among the white boys to get the credit. again, they're awesome. i just hope qbert + the like will get their due.

strictly bluegrass festival | 10.27 | speedway meadows in gg park: before you gloss over this one, take note that emmylou harris + alison krauss with union station will be playing. it's free from 11-5. for those who have forgotten, i will remind you... if i show up, emmylou will sing directly + only to me for the whole show. it's just the way it is. i'm sorry. the poor thing can't help herself for some reason. most people know alison has this unearthly voice, but she is also an amazing fiddle player. what's the difference between a violin + a fiddle? ...three beers.

on a related note
down from the mountain | 10.11-17 | red vic movie house : i promise i will not get into the habit of recommending movies, but this one is a documentary of the concert at the ryman auditorium featuring most of the musicians from the soundtrack to "o, brother, where art thou?"

then back to the music

helplessness is an illusion

yeah, i'm no saint. i want to hurt back as well. a helpless wounded dog.
however i feel that helplessness is the belief that love is not enough.
do you believe that?
what have you built out of fear or anger that you are proud of?
forgive me this cliche:
you are surrounded by darkness?
for god's/allah's/jehovah's/buddah's/pete's/fuck's sake turn on YOUR light.

(my apologies to neil diamond)

by the way, if you're receiving this + are wondering who this rambling lunatic is, let me know + i'll take you off the email list. otherwise, i'll see you out on the town.

crystal method | 9.29 | warfield

cousteau w/david j | 9.30 | slim's : ever since that vw commercial, everyone is being compared to nick drake, including this band cousteau. i'm not saying there's not a genius out there paramount to nick drake, but cousteau ain't it. they aren't even close. they're more like tears for fears, except with slightly better lyrics. that's not meant to be a dig. 'everybody wants to rule the world' was a great song. david j (who's also been compared to drake for chrissake!) of bauhaus/bubblemen/love+rockets fame opens.

kristin hersh | 10.7 | slim's : if you missed the throwing muses reunion, she's back solo.

old 97s | 10.12 | fillmore : i'm an enormous fan of the altcountry movement, but for some reason i still haven't gotten into these cats. i've heard they're fun live.

john hiatt + the goners | 10.17 | slim's : such an amazing player. i saw him in an 'in the round' performance once with emmylou, jimmie dale, + willie. poor jimmie dale had to follow him + expressed his anguish at that. here's a chance to see him with one of his best bands, the goners, which features sonny landreth playing a mean slide. i mean mean.

beulah w/starlight mints | 10.20 | gamh : several people have told me i should catch locals beulah. this would be the time for me to. the starlight mints are brilliant. their sound reminds me of the flaming lips, who is also from oklahoma. truly bizarre psychedelic garage rock mixed with world sounds. also if you're a fan of neutral milk hotel.

stereolab | 10.22-23 | fillmore : two women onstage who look like angst ridden supermodels who'd really rather be somewhere else than onstage. sounds terribly pretensious, + perhaps it is, but the music is genius + well they are pretty...

travis | 10.25 | warfield : brilliant pop. they're not playing for free this time

buddy + julie miller | 10.26 | slim's : buddy's considered a 'paid his dues' kind of songwriter. julie is the friggin jewel. she has a voice that can't help but gut you emotionally. it's a quirky voice, don't get me wrong. in the same vein as iris dement or victoria williams. her songs are just too powerful + dead on as well. she has this one where the lyrics are so simple, i'm almost ashamed that it can bring me to tears, you know? i mean to bring me to tears you should have to write something amazingly complex with incredible depth. the words may be simple, but the emotion behind it isn't. if iris is the female jimmie dale, the music world has its work cut out for it to find julie's counterpart.

rocket from the crypt | 10.27 | gamh

jane's addiction | 10.29 | oakland arena : did i miss a headline in a fanzine somewhere? what the hell is this?

black heart procession | 10.30 | gamh : i have several friends whom i went to see this show with last time they were through town. they love this band. i love them on record. the jury's still out for me on the live show. on their behalf i'll say if i were trying to be socal's answer to nick cave, i wouldn't want to face a crowd that was amped up after seeing the ex. at midnight to boot.

loudon wainwright iii | 11.4 | gamh : yeah i've got a soft spot for singer songwriters, but i'll tell you, loudon will have you in tears laughing at your own fears, trials + tribulations. + he's not afraid of coming off as some bitter old bastard either (his songs are incredibly personal) he also has an amazing talent for coming up with a song on the spot. he played the cactus (where i worked) the night that bush (sr.) sent ground troops into iraq. he'd already written an entire song about it. he couldn't have had more than 2 hours to write it. by november he should have a double album ready. yeah rufus (the tit man) is his son.

built to spill | 11.8-12 | slim's : this time for five nights. they'll probably sell them all out. bless them for not playing the warfield

u2 | 11.15 | oakland arena : yeah, whatever.

tried to trace that frame slight sighs

but i can't embrace those fawny eyes

sigur ros | 10.4 | warfield : go see them. icelandic indie ethereal pop. they've greatly influenced radiohead. kid a started with these guys. cheaper than that other icelander playing in october: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1266638791

this is a love song to nothing

'cause i can't get nothing out of my head.

i really think i'm going to go broke here. four shows last week, then look at this.

ween |8.28+29 | fillmore : here are incredibly talented musicians that simply rip off every rock band in existence (knowingly). they don't take themselves seriously, which is a good friggin thing for rock music. guaranteed you will giggle at least once at this show.

gillian welch | 9.5 | fillmore : beautiful songwriter. great smoky mountain voice. i consider her the female richard buckner. her songs have been covered by the likes of emmylou. you've heard her if you have seen or have the soundtrack to the horse whisperer or o, brother where art thou. get her album revival, but for sure git yer ass down to the fillmore. "oh the night came undone like a party dress, + fell at her feet in a beautiful mess. the smoke + the whisky came home in her curls + crept through the dreams of the barroom girls."

grant lee phillips | 9.5 | bimbo's : the leader of grant lee buffalo + shiva burlesque brings his bellow to bimbo's

taj mahal w/ funky meters | 9.7 | warfield : taj is phenomenal. he simply runs the gamut of traditional + drills right through you. the funky meters will get your ass wiggling while thumping your heart. what a great double bill.

laurie anderson | 9.6+7 | bimbo's : you never know what you're going to get when you see laurie, but every time i've seen her it's been larger than life. i saw her not long after she 'married' lou reed + she did several of her own renditions of velvet underground songs, some humorous, some poignant. she definitely walks that line of performer vs artist.

belle + sebastian | 9.8 | warfield : it could be argued that these cats have made jazz folk hip again. poppity sound somewhere between the acoustic yo la tengo (ok, VU again) + nick drake, with very contemporary themes lyrically.

p j harvey | 9.18 | warfield (rumored date) : once i can see an actual confirmation of this date i will wax poetic about my love for this fine specimen. i'll just give you a hint by saying one of my goals in life is to just once help her smear her lipstick just right before she takes the stage.

all tomorrow's parties |10.19-21 | ucla campus : sonic youth is curating this festival which includes the likes of themselves, bardo pond, stereolab, cat power, stephen malkmus, smog, that eddie vedder guy, jon spencer be + get this: television. television! tickets are already on sale. $100 bucks for the weekend. road trip.
http://www.wayahead.com/atp/sy2001.htm

nick cave tickets go on sale sunday if you're interested.

this week i'll be at:

pernice brothers | 8.3 | BotH : if you are a fan of great pop music that will never make it to radio because it's too intelligent. once country or alt-country, there's almost no hint of country in them anymore. but god, they're good. thought i was blind. when she speaks it's like a mime. it's hard to read a simple mind. turns me inside out in a way i can't define. it's a long way to fall when you find out how it never was.

patti smith | 8.7+8 | fillmore : if you have not seen her, you must. a legend. last time i saw her she began the show by reading a poem. it looked like it would be a quiet intellectual adventure. the crowd clapped (it was a great poem) then she took a drink of water as the band began playing 'paint it black' she turned to the audience + spewed a mouthful of water lackadaisically. i knew it was going to be a beautiful evening. 'in heart, i'm a moslem. in heart i'm an american. in heart i am a moslem. in heart i am an american artist. + i have no guilt.'

joe henry | 8.8 | bimbo's : scar is the best release of 2001 i have purchased this year. of course it's hard to go wrong when you're surrounded by people like brad mehldau, me'shell ndegeocello, mark ribot + ornette coleman. ornette coleman...he's my jazz ace in the hole for my (obviously unbiased) theory that the best musicians in the world come from texas. once again i digress. joe started out solidly in country + his sound has steadily morphed, all the while writing great songs. i can't find a stitch of country in the new album. he's got a smoky full voice + his songs are filled with honesty + heartache.

melodies and moons might sting

but what life the swelling brings

original harmony ridge creek drippers | 7.21 | starry plough -berk : 2 gigs in the bay area. i mentioned them last time, but here they're playing in berkeley + you can go get fairly good bbq at flint's prior.

pato banton | 7.27 | justice league : toaster from the 80s

joe henry | 8.8 | bimbo's : scar is the best release of 2001 i have purchased this year. of course it's hard to go wrong when you're
surrounded by people like brad mehldau, me'shell ndegeocello, mark ribot + ornette coleman. ornette coleman...he's my jazz ace in the hole for my (obviously unbiased) theory that the best musicians in the world come from texas. once again i digress. joe started out solidly in country + his sound has steadily morphed, all the while writing great songs. i can't find a stitch of country in the new album. he's got a smoky full voice + his songs are filled with honesty + heartache.

matthew sweet | 8.9 | slim's : i'm a sucker for a good pop song. matthew has buckets full.

superdrag | 8.11 | bottom of the hill (show at 6) : not sure why, but these guys will be playing broad daylight for an early show.

zakir hussain, bill laswell, talvin singh, karsh kale, ustad sultan khan | 8.12 | stern grove : not sure, but my guess is they will all be onstage at the same time, which is in itself phenomenal. this is listed as an 'electronica' show. laswell has performed|produced all over the map from funk to punk to hip hop. for the last few years he has been putting albums together with world musician ('imaginary cuba' is genius) + electronic (i guess) rhythms. talvin singh is a tablas player who has always combined modern influence in his music. to the best of my knowledge the rest are all classically indian musicians.

damon + naomi | 8.30 |BotH : when the 'leader' of galaxie500 peeled off, these two stuck together. great on album, never seen them live.
mudhoney | 9.1+2 | BotH : leaders of the sleazy end of grunge. three chords. + they did that collaboration with jimmie dale gilmore.

mick taylor | 9.1 | gamh : one of the more impressive resumes in music, i'm really only recommending him because he played on 'sticky fingers' + 'exile on main street'. after all, i only get my rocks off while i'm dreaming.

oh yeah, i found out syd straw is opening for glenn tilbrook (see below).

how to find hulett this week (actual shows i'll be attending):

alejandro escovedo | 7.21 | BotH : ok. this one i WOULD be going to but i'll be out of town.
one of my favorite singer songwriters from austin. played in the nuns back in sf's punk days (the real ones back in the 70s i mean). then rank+file then led one of the most powerful guitar armies i ever saw, (the) true believers. then he put out a few introspective folky sounding albums. now in concert you're never sure what persona he'll take on. he can turn on a dime from motor city nose hair singing punk to orchestral bliss to soulful country. his voice is a drone. his voice is five hearts breaking. 'the sky's a fire just waiting to die + his heart's as empty as a dead man's eye. she held his hand, looked him in the eye + said, believe, believe + everything will be fine.'

spoon | 7.25 | gamh : i will be front + center at this band. saw them at bimbo's a few months back for the first time in years. i was expecting to hear their first album which is heavily 'surfer rosa' pixies. they played only one or two songs from that album, so i only knew half of what they played + the new stuff blew me away. costello, pixies, kinks, just a brilliant pop/punk writer. do not miss this band. they blew superchunk off the stage. from austin + i'm homesick. 'don't say a word, the last one's still stinging. back of my mind, i hear that phone ringing. + there is no way back from this. everything hits at once.'

lucinda williams | 7.26 | warfield : my wall-eyed baby. when i worked at the cactus, lucinda once walked up to me + said, "you have an adorable smile." i smiled for about a month after that. oh yeah, her music... blues based country, + a band with extreme rock firepower. great lyrics + a great voice. "if only for a minute or two, i wanna know what it feels like to be without you. i wanna feel the touch of my own skin, against the sun, against the wind."

jonathan richman | 7.28 | BotH : (give paris one more chance) about ten months ago, at a time when i really needed it, a good friend introduced me to the poetry of hafez, an old sufist poet from persia. so we went to the bookstore + i picked up a collection. he told me during our walk out of the store that hafez's poetry is often used in persia for guidance. you would open the book + whatever poem you land on has a message that you need to hear. so i did, + was stunned. the poem, though wide sweeping in scope (not like grandma's refrigerator poetry, mind you), was filled with incredible detail and things that seemed incredibly personal to me. i have yet to put that book on a shelf. so several months ago i go see jonathan at the make out room. now i've been a fan for a long time, seen him several. every time i see him, he plays at least four new songs that are incredible. i kind of got the feeling that if modern america had anyone similar to hafez, this guy is it. you will always smile at a jonathan richman show. he is life affirming. but the reason he's so much fun is not because he only writes about flippant good time stuff. though he does do that, but he also searches deep in the core for painful things + renders them in a way that you realize that there is beauty there. besides you can tell he is having a ball with it. last time i saw him i was 15 feet from him. several new songs that floored me. one in particular in which he stared straight at me smiling through the whole song. exactly the song i needed to hear. he hasn't recorded it. if you don't know of him + are curious as to what he sounds like, he was the minstrel in 'something about mary.' he has such a thick boston accent that there are times when he almost needs subtitles. he plays a hollow body gibson + often takes it off (which means there is no music playing) so he can dance around onstage. ...with no music playing.

2 second goodbye linger (no tongue)

some might say friendly, but i've come undone.

rosie flores | 7.11 | elbo room : the rockabilly filly.

gene loves jezebel | 7.14 | cafe du nord : hee hee. gotcha. unlike the next group, isn't this place too big for them? they should be playing bart stations, right?

victoria williams w/mark olson + the original harmony ridge creek drippers | 7.20 | cafe du nord : i would have thought they'd fill a larger venue. her voice will play your heartstrings like a poignant little fiddle.

fishbone | 7.27 | pound : funk, ska, punk. i must admit, i stopped following these guys after in your face. would be nice to see what they're like now.

ramblin' jack elliott | 7.27 | noe valley ministry : used to hang with woody, then bob dylan, his name is more about his ability to talk your ear off (believe me, he chatted me up for an hour at the cactus) than his wandering lifestyle. an american icon.

david byrne | 7.30 | warfield : sold out the fillmore. on to the larger warfield. mr. jones's pants are falling down. aces high!

pernice brothers | 8.3 | BotH : if you are a fan of great pop music that will never make it to radio because it's too intelligent. once country or alt-country, there's almost no hint of country in them anymore. but god, they're good. thought i was blind. when she speaks it's like a mime. it's hard to read a simple mind. turns me inside out in a way i can't define. it's a long way to fall when you find out how it never was.

tricky | 8.9 | fillmore : back so soon.

angelique kidjo | 8.10 | fillmore

tool | 8.10+11 | berkeley comm. theater : metal or punk?

go-go's | 8.21 | warfield : no joke. i love them

the exploited | 8.25 | maritime : brit political thrash.

oscar peterson | 8.28 - 9.2 | yoshi's : jazz piano great. his jobim renditions, well... butter.

flogging molly w/ rev. horton heat | 9.1 | fillmore : i used to see rev. h h at the hole in the wall in austin (you could get in for only a buck if you said you were just going to play pool in back - a pitcher of shiner later we'd sneak a table in the front room). they were rockabilly straight ahead. then i saw them at some street thing + they had a huge crowd with crowd surfers + a mosh pit.

nick cave | 9.20+21 | warfield : gripping visceral baritone cabaret goth blues punk. + the mercy seat is waiting + i think my head is smoking.

breath held, my heart expands

+ my head reels in the beautiful mess.

sorry, my horoscope said something about me not being at a loss for words.

sex mob, will bernard, scott amendola | 7.5 | gamh : jazz all over the map night. sex mob is a mix of preservation hall, soul, funk + damn near indie rock. are they the next lounge lizards? i don't know, but they're definitely fishing with john. will bernard has played with many + he's got a purty guitar. scott amendola played at my friend's wedding. guts loves you, shillie.

teenage fanclub | 7.20+21 | slim's : scottish indie popsters. they laid the groundwork for the sound you hear from the verve + the foo fighters. of course that's not a new sound in its ownright...

alejandro escovedo | 7.21 | BotH :
one of my favorite singer songwriters from austin. played in the nuns back in sf's punk days (the real ones back in the 70s i mean). then rank+file then led one of the most powerful guitar armies i ever saw, (the) true believers. then he put out a few introspective folky sounding albums. now in concert you're never sure what persona he'll take on. he can turn on a dime from motor city nose hair singing punk to orchestral bliss to soulful country. his voice is a drone. his voice is five hearts breaking.
'the sky's a fire just waiting to die + his heart's as empty as a dead man's eye. she held his hand, looked him in the eye + said, believe, believe + everything will be fine.'

glenn tilbrook | 7.24 | slim's : not sure if this is the lennon or the mccartney from squeeze. o.k. actually i do know. their writing process is actually more jagger/richards (tilbrook being the lyricist) but the songs were more beatles (prior to bob dylan's ripping their pop stance to shreds). this is billed as an acoustic show promoting his solo album, so who knows if he'll play any squeeze hits. probably will.
'the stain on my notebook says nothing to me.'

spoon | 7.25 | gamh : i will be front + center at this band. saw them at bimbo's a few months back for the first time in years. i was expecting to hear their first album which is heavily 'surfer rosa' pixies. they played only one or two songs from that album, so i only knew half of what they played + the new stuff blew me away. costello, pixies, kinks, just a brilliant pop/punk writer. do not miss this band. they blew superchunk off the stage. from austin + i'm homesick.
'don't say a word, the last one's still stinging. back of my mind, i hear that phone ringing. + there is no way back from this. everything hits at once.'

robert walter's 20th congress | 7.27+28 | gamh : walter played keys at a show i went to recently. he was the only one in the lineup i hadn't heard of. now i know. he held his ground with charlie hunter, fred wesley + mike clark. never heard his band, but it should prove to be solid. 2% jazz. 98% funky stuff.

dismemberment plan | 7.29 | BotH : talk about all over the map, these guys can go from rage against the machine to xtc to primus to super furry animals, sometimes in one song.

area:one fest | 7.31 | shoreline : moby, new order, outkast, the roots, the orb, paul oakenfold, timo maas, rinocerose. all i can say is there better be a lot of sunblock on sale. the fans of most of these guys i doubt rarely see the sun.

the gossip | 8.1 | gamh : i saw this band open for sleater-kinney. a trio, if i remember correctly. the lead singer was probably 20. wearing fishnet hose, a skirt to make ally mcbeall blush + dern near falling out of her top. 5 feet tall. 200 pounds. so here's this buxome woman endlessly bouncing around on stage. at first it was fellini in its absurdity. then it was uplifting, fun + downright beautiful to see a woman proud of her girth with no care as to how she eeked out of her clothes. the music was 3 chords + nice turns of phrases.

everclear | 8.1 | warfield : i can't make up my mind on these guys. one minute i think they're great, the next i think they're horrendous. i wish they would stabilize. never seen them live.

cowboy junkies | 8.4 | warfield : at least they turned a lot of people on to townes van zandt before he died. again i have mixed feelings for this band. that first album is pretty good, though.

stevie nicks | 8.14+15 | outdoor thingies : stand back. one of my favorite lines in 'sid and nancy' is when nancy sees herself in a storefront display...

jim carroll | 8.15 | gamh : the basketball diaries author. considered to be the punk poet laureate, but i think patti smith or lou reed could take him.

erykah badu | 8.17 | chronicle pavilion : i've embarassed myself enough salivating over this woman. bald is sexy too.

dewdrop lashes (i'm such a lucky guy)

open your mouth + let the butterflies out

isaac hayes | 6.22 | paramount oakland : sorry i'm so late on this one. i just saw it today. this is a tribute show to gordon parks, the man behind the shaft movie (he's also got an exhibit of his photography at the oakland museum). ya damn skippy. shut yo mouth.

trilok gurtu | 7.06 | justice league : gurtu is an indian jazz percussionist who fuses indian ragas with african + american jazz. this show should be filled with mesmerizing talent.

quasi | 7.11 | BotH : sam coomes + janet weiss. sam was in heatmiser with elliott smith. janet's the drummer for sleater-kinney. together they sound a bit like elliott smith fueled by a cacophony of grinding punk + almost cheesy synths. it works. well.

echo + the bunnymen | 7.22 | fillmore : go ahead. take your best shot. shoogah keessessss...

warren zevon | 7.26 | fillmore : sorry i'm saving my breath for the next one.

jonathan richman | 7.28 | BotH : (give paris one more chance) about ten months ago, at a time when i really needed it, a good friend introduced me to the poetry of hafez, an old sufist poet from persia. so we went to the bookstore + i picked up a collection. he told me during our walk outof the store that hafez's poetry is often used in persia for guidance. you would open the book + whatever poem you land on has a message that you need to hear. so i did, + was stunned. the poem, though wide sweeping in scope (not like grandma's refrigerator poetry, mind you), was filled with incredible detail and things that seemed incredibly personal to me. i have yet to put that book on a shelf. so several months ago i go see jonathan at the make out room. now i've been a fan for a long time, seen him several. every time i see him, he plays at least four new songs that are incredible. i kind of got the feeling that if modern america had anyone similar to hafez, this guy is it. you will always smile at a jonathan richman show. he is life affirming. but the reason he's so much fun is not because he only writes about flippant good time stuff. though he does do that, but he also searches deep in the core for painful things + renders them in a way that you realize that there is beauty there. besides you can tell he is having a ball with it. last time i saw him i was 15 feet from him. several new songs that floored me. one in particular in which he stared straight at me smiling through the whole song. exactly the song i needed to hear. he hasn't recorded it.
if you don't know of him + are curious as to what he sounds like, he was the minstrel in 'something about mary.' he has such a thick boston accent that there are times when he almost needs subtitles. he plays a hollow body gibson + often takes it off (which means there is no music playing) so he can dance around onstage. ...with no music playing.

dwight yoakum | 8.22+23 | fillmore : mainstream country friggin' sucks. how this guy made it in there i don't know.

i've changed the locks on my front door

dave alvin w/peter case | 6.8 | slim's : i've mentioned peter before. one of my favorites. dave alvin (blasters, x) is firmly entrenched in roots rock.

billy joe shaver | 6.15 | BotH : this guy is a country music legend. up there with willie, waylon + merle. very honest singer songwriter with a maimed finger. "i've been to georgia on a fast train, honey. i wasn't born no yesterday. i got a good christian raising + an eight grade education, i see no reason for y'all to be treating me this way."

supersuckers w/m.i.r.v. | 6.22+23 | slim's : loud + blazing show.

pink martini | 6.25+27 | gamh : jazz, samba, cabaret, swing from ...oregon. how hip are you?

the derailers | 6.30 | slim's : these guys were just beginning to rip up the austin scene when i left. straight ahead honky tonk bakersfield style swing in the tradition of buck owens.

peter himmelman | 7.8 | gamh : i haven't seen him in a while, but he's a talented pop songwriter. do not request 'freebird'. he will play it in its entirety.

mike doughty | 7.11 | gamh : the soul coughing guy. step aside + let the man go through. let the man go through.

trey anastasio | 7.13 | greek theatre - berk : i'm not even gonna attempt to describe this phish guy, for fear that one of you is a really big fan. bring a gas mask or a lot of febreeze.

the white stripes | 7.14@bimbo's 7.15@gamh : mentioned before. one guy, one girl. drums + guitar. poppy mod.

lucinda williams | 7.26 | warfield : my wall-eyed baby. when i worked at the cactus, lucinda once walked up to me + said, "you have an adorable smile." i smiled for about a month after that. oh yeah, her music... blues based country. great lyrics + a great voice. "if only for a minute or two, i wanna know what it feels like to be without you. i wanna feel the touch of my own skin, against the sun, against the wind."

jill scott | 7.27 | greek theatre -berk : jill scott started out with the roots. great soul hip-hop artist. honest songs. not quite, but damn near close to erykah + lauryn.

a wispy hung moon

goldfrapp | 5.9 | GAMH : fans of portishead, don't miss this one. you may remember allison goldfrapp's voice from the song pumpkin (off of tricky's first album). mellow trip hop with a spy + torch song feel.

john scofield | 5.22-26 | yoshi's : jazz-rock guitar great.

calexico | 6.3 | bimbo's : i was just talking with a friend about how i've never seen these guys live or even advertised. arizona based, named after the border town between cali + mexico, their sound ranges from dusty folk to spaghetti western tinged with mexican traditional. the core of this band has always been john convertino + joey burns, from giant sand. op8, friends of dean martinez...

spain | 6.13 | BotH : this is jazz great charlie haden's son's band. but don't expect josh to sound like his dad. he doesn't. this is indie rock with an amazing plethora of influences, including jazz.

radiohead | 6.27 | shoreline : sorry i forgot to mention this one earlier. if you like them, i hope you went to see sigur ros last night. radiohead, though ground breaking, aren't breaking it by themselves. kid a came from iceland.

ani difranco | 7.6 | greek theater - berk : hulett digs ani, even though the smell of patchoulli at her shows can be overwhelming... probably better than the smell it's masking, i guess.

air | 7.9+10 | warfield : i dig these guys if only because their flash video for 'sexy boy' on the web quoted le corbusier to no end.

nina simone | 7.11 | paramount -oakland : damnit, i'm gonna find that cd so i can quote her for you, i promise.

sade | 7.17+18 | those damn outdoor theaters : a flawless woman

oh, and james brown added a second show for june 1 at the paramount

get up (get on up-ah)

incredibly strange wrestling | 5.5 | fillmore : so you couldn't get joan jett tix + el vez is too 'tame' for you? here's to what should be the most absurd thing you can go to for cinco de mayo. these guys play punk, build a wrestling ring in the middle of the fillmore, wrestle bartenders + the audience, wear mexican wrestling outfits + near the end of the show throw tortillas into the crowd. dios mio.

************************
james brown + tower of power | 5.31 | paramount in oakland : my biggest fear is that i overlook an ad for a show like this + all of you are pissed at me 'cause you couldn't get tickets in time. tickets are on sale right now... i have no idea if any are left. i already have tickets for another 'don't miss' show for this evening, but i tell you... jb...AND tower of power... AND at the paramount? friggin' 'ell (on the one). eeeeeeeeeEEE-UNNGH! POPCORN!
*************************

kool keith | 6.30 | maritime ...i mentioned this guy a while back. amazing turntablist + performance artist.

a moon confused

+ then sometimes i'm too wordy for my own goody.i've added some fine folk, so if this email list is new to you + you don't want to receive it, tell me to piss off + i will.

on to hulett's money drain:

03.17.01 | kronos quartet | yerba buena : you know these guys right?

03.19.01 | mogwai | bimbo's : scots blowing the doors off the manchester scene

03.21.01 | john hammond | gamh : blues standard. yup his daddy discovered people like billie holiday + bob dylan

03.24.01 | sarah harmer | cafe du nord : i've yet to see her live, but i've liked her recordings. smart lyrics catchy tunes, this is a lilith fair warning i must say.

03.26+27.01 | nick cave | palace of fine arts :
already brought him up. don't miss him.

03.31.01 | jad fair | starry plough, berkeley : quirkiest of the quirky, this guy writes from the heart + bares his insecurities in your face. very catchy tunes to go with all the emotional exposure. his voice isn't for everyone, but i love this guy. original force behind half japanese, one of the longest living punk bands around. the violent femmes literally lifted their sound from him. thank you, kraly.

04.01.01 | jonatha brooke | fillmore : breathy + catchy songster from the story. again...lilith

04.02.01 | guided by voices | fillmore : indie-arty-poppy-ohioans. and BRILLIANT.

04.03.01 | the waterboys | fillmore : tone down the punk from the pogues. is that the best way i can describe these irish wizards? i wish i was a fisherman...

04.03.01 | rodney crowell | slim's : almost but will never make it to radio country guy. solid songs. lots of 'em. done by the likes of emmylou.

04.07.01 | soft boys w/the young fresh fellows | fillmore : robyn hitchcock's old punk band (iiiiiiiii wanna destroooooooyyy youuuu) the soft boys + the young fresh fellows? this is a don't miss. me already got tickets.

04.09+10.01 | joe jackson | 09-fillmore 10-warfield : yeah he drifted + drifts into some highly questionable territory, but.... he still has those few songs that light me at times.

04.12.00 | psychedelic furs | fillmore : don't make me describe them. i'm a victim of the john hughes time period i grew up in. "inside you the tide moves..."

04.12.00 | merle haggard | gershwin theater : 'hey hurtin' me now don't mean a thing. since love ain't here i don't feel no pain. my mind ain't nothin' but a total blank. i think i'll just stay here and draynk.' i wanna go to this if only to see the people who can afford the tickets meandering with the fanatics who spent their entire paycheck so they could see him.

04.13+14.01 | shane mcgowan + the popes | fillmore : i still haven't seen him solo, for fear of it obliterating my memory of how amazing the pogues were when they each had a keg of guiness at their feet for a show.

04.13.01 | lloyd cole | slim's : i'm sensing some kind of 80s flashback thing going on here. she's got perfect skin...

04.18.01 | david thomas | BotH : ex-frontman for pere ubu. probably the only person i can think of who could challenge jad fair to the quirky title. pere ubu was amazing. the pixies lifted a lot of their sound from them.

04.19.01 | fear | slim's : straight ahead old school brilliant punk

04.21.01 | poi dog pondering | fillmore : these guys used to play at the cafe i worked at for free on friday afternoon. i think they're in chicago now. i thought they broke up. i'm really having flashbacks now...only in the nineties. they were really good back then. now? i'd rather go see:

04.21.01 | richard buckner | BotH :
best living songwriter + maybe poet i know of. has a way with tunes + a nice breathy almost appalachian voice. he's taken country + deconstructed it. look for me. i'll be the blonde weepy puddle @ the front of the stage.

04.22+23.01 | arab strap | BotH : more scottish popsters, but definitely more on the dark reflective folky end of the spectrum. nick
drake meets nick cave + belle+sebastian.

04.27.01 | pancho sanchez | latin jazz super-percussionist. you will find your ass has a mind of its own @ this show.

05.01+02.01 | jets to brazil | slim's: fans of local punk heroes jawbreaker (the sf h¸sker d¸) don't miss this one.

05.10+11.01 | folk implosion + lou barlow | BotH : lou barlow, the genius behind sebadoh, opening for his own side project band.
introspective indie rocker...this show will likely be a little more introspective than sebadoh.

05.14.01 | melvins | slim's : seattle seattle seattle (it wouldn't have happened without these cats) really loud, really ugly.

05.18+19.01 | frank black + the catholics | slim's : pixies
front yelper. break my body, hold my bones (hold my bones) you're so pretty when you're unFAITHful to me

05.26.01 | throwing muses | slim's : swirly reunion.

05.31.01 | the flatlanders | slim's : do you have any idea how flat lubbock is? how that town produced 4 incredible musician/songwriters in the same generation is beyond me. i need to drink that water. butch hancock: i've held conversations with him on several occassions. i don't know how. i mean how he carries on a conversation when obviously there is a string of poetry flowing through his brain at all times. jimmie dale gilmore: warbler extraordinaire. one of, if not the best voice in country music today. named after jimmie rogers, somehow his voice actually lives up to that, except i've never really heard him yodel. joe ely: the rockin' showman that grabbed the clash's attention back in their day. david byrne called these guys country music's velvet
underground. bless david byrne's little heart. all amazing songwriters. more a legend than a band indeed. (the 4th mentioned up there is not in the flatlanders, + that's terry allen.)

hollow rings

cheryl wheeler | 4.26 | freight + salvage, berkeley -good country singer songwriter. bring a flask

j. mascis + the fog | 4.27 | GAMH -dino jr guy

mekons | 4.28 | GAMH -i keep thinking this band broke up. one of the earliest punk meets country bands from leeds, england. jon langford's first band for those familiar with the waco brothers.

tippa ire w/pato banton | 4.28 | justice league -two incredible toasters for you reggae fans.

prince | 4.28 | arena in oakland -genius.

jerry jeff walker | 5.1 + 7.22 | GAMH -big drunken fratboy draw in my homestate, but that still couldn't keep me away from his amazing songs. how many people can say bob dylan recorded one of their songs? the crowd here will likely be different, i guess, but there is a lot of woodwork in this town.

sigur ros | 5.2 | fillmore -iceland's answer to the emerging ambient pop scene from the british isles.

rocket from the crypt | 5.2 | GAMH -heavily influenced by the 80's minneapolis scene (h¸sker d¸ + replacements) + mixed with that southern cal punk sound (minutemen, x), these are some of the truest punks out there. get their tattoo + see 'em free.

terence blanchard quintet | 5.3-6 | yoshi's - hard bop trumpeter who worked under marsalis + then moved on to art blakey's jazz messengers. probably best known for his movie scores for spike lee, which tend to be mellower than his normal solo hard bop.

el vez | 5.5 | GAMH -the self proclaimed 'mexican elvis', son of elvis + charo. cheese at its finest. the date is the most important thing here. cinco

joan jett + the blackhearts | 5.5 | BotH -yes, hulett is recommending joan jett + the blackhearts. they will give your hair a new part. i do love rock 'n' roll, after all

rufus wainwright | 5.6 | GAMH -loudon wainwright iii's son, who sounds absolutely nothing like his dad. rufus is much more jazz oriented with a little over the top drama thrown in. rufus is a tit man (loudon was a bit off with that one)

chick corea | 5.9-13 | yoshi's -chick replaced herbie in miles' group. truth be told, i don't know that much more about him, as his music as i've heard it always fell a little flat with me. disagree? convert me. i'm open.

g. love + special sauce | 5.15 | warfield -never got into 'em, but i figured some of you would be interested.

herbie hancock (appearance) | 5.16 | bimbo's -who knows what 'appearance' means for this julian priester benefit show, but herbie in a place as small as bimbo's???

peter case | 5.18 | slim's -great singer songwriter primarily in the old 'busker' sense. a guy who used to play on the streets of san francisco for spare change. he also fronted the plimsouls (remember 'a million miles away'?) he belts the songs out with a soulful sensibility with tales of hard luck. are you a fan of steve earle?

dave matthews | 5.18-19 | pacbell park -again, not really into him, though i appreciate the musicianship. i figured several of you would be interested.

john mayall | 5.25 | slim's -one of the first 60's blues white boys

ben harper | 5.26 | greek theatre -uc berk

tom petty + the heartbreakers | 5.28 | chronicle pavilion -i may never see him again, if i have to sit on the grass + see him on a 20 yard wide television. 'i don't understand the world today'

gourds | 6.1 | slim's (benefit show) -the texas pogues co-headline a benefit show

del mccoury band | 6.12 | GAMH -great bluegrass band. really great.

built to spill | 6.16-19 | slim's

stereo mc's | 6.20 | slim's

ex w/ black heart procession | 6.27 @ BotH | 6.28 @ GAMH -the ex are a mixed bag of punk + european folk indie cats from amsterdam. black heart procession are a mixed bag of desert, sea, cabaret meets nick cave from san diego. a great mixed bag. don't miss this one.

red house painters | 7.1 | GAMH -you a fan of american music club? this guy bares his soul similarly. folkyrock despair + loss.

ani difranco | 7.6 | greek theatre -uc berk

roxy music | 8.5 | chronicle pavilion -i once heard that guy in the banana hammock that sang for duran duran claim that he was heavily influenced by the velvet underground. it took me awhile but i figured out he was hearing the VU filtered through roxy music. that doesn't make roxy music bad. i like them, even if they are this missing link. again, i don't want to pay over $40 to sit on the grass + see bryan ferry on tv

madonna | 9.5 | arena in oakland -quit rubbing your eyes. she's huge. i gotta open my closet every now + then. no, i'm not going. unless one of you wants to buy me a ticket.

widespread panic | 10.12-13 | greek theatre -uc berk jam band with sounds of the south: rock, blues, jazz + folk

i'm moving to saratoga

04.13 | carlos! + john vanderslice | BotH -vanderslice does that song 'bill gates must die', though his music really is pretty good + not just a novelty one-off. haven't seen carlos! but i like the exclamation! reminds me of wham! something tells me that they ain't no wham! though!

04.19 | evan dando | cellar @ johnny foley's -speaking of somebody must die. here's that lemonheads guy. (it's a shame about ray)

04.26 | tricky | fillmore -aww yeah

04.29 | iggy pop | fillmore - most people know him for 'lust for life' from trainspotting + suv commercials. trainspotting makes sense, but it's just odd that a weird little in-shape wrinkly worm toad who has a habit of pulling his package out onstage would be selling the american dream. i dig him. 'i'm so messed up i want you here, i'm so messed up, i want you near, now i got you face to face as i lay right down in my favorite place + now i wanna be your dog. so come on!'

04.30 | fatboy slim | fillmore

05.12 | white stripes | fillmore -one guy, one girl, a guitar + drums. some mod rockin' tunes.

05.31 | david byrne | fillmore -ironic that he's playing the same night as the band i quoted him on the last one o' these.

06.05+06 | tortoise | fillmore -leaders of the stripped down jazz/punk scene from chicago. sea+cake...sam prekop...gastr del sol... this drummer (john mc entire) leaves me speechless. sometimes borders on techno-sounding, except there's not a computer around.

06.15 | blake babies | gamh - juliana hatfield's old band. juliana hatfield? one of the first of the 'girly' voices that became really prevalent in post-nirvana punk (lord, forgive me, folks. that just didn't sound right. waaay too pretentious...i need elbow patches a pipe + a pierced tongue to talk like that). anyway, the blake babies were one of the first. she also has been involved in giant sand (have i raved enough about them?), the lemonheads, + the juliana hatfield three. remember "i hate my sister...she makes me sick."? i like juliana. especially with the blake babies.

check out why i'm moving to saratoga

no way in hell i'm describin' 'em all (from may - september):
wallflowers (if all they ever wrote was 'one headlight', well, nevermind) | john lee hooker | emmylou harris (o.k. if you go to this, i have to warn you that if i'm there emmylou will ignore the rest of the crowd + sing directly + only to me. i don't know why. she just has a thing for me) w/ joe henry | cesaria evora w/bebel gilberto (weird double, but two women with amazing voices, one all about belting, the other all about subtlety) | bela fleck | nina simone (there's this great quote of hers during a song where she stops the band + admonishes them for pushing the tempo too hard. for fear of misquoting, i'll save it until i bring the cd in.) | chieftains | lyle lovett (lyle's music has been keeping me in good company recently) | mary chapin carpenter w/ steve earle + the dukes (steve was on FIRE when i saw him in march. or maybe i was. hmmmm...) | shawn colvin (great lyricist. great voice, great guitarist. nice nose) | indigo girls | lou rawls, baby | cowboy junkies (they're still around?) | gipsy kings | willie nelson -I LUUUUUV YOUUUUU, WILLLIEEEEE!!!!!!! | dwight yoakum | john prine | smokey robinson
